Mossie looks like a modern nickname and is probably a medieval one. Moss was the ordinary English form of Moses in the Middle Ages — not a Jewish name particularly, but a Christian one, taken from the Old Testament like Adam and Abraham — and it was also the English mouth's version of the Norman name Maurice.

The story of Mossie
The medieval English habit of wearing names down is the reason so many surnames look nothing like their sources. Moses became Moss; Maurice became Morris and Moss; Bartholomew became Bate and Batty; Nicholas became Nick, Colin and Collett. The process was purely oral — nobody was writing much down, the clergy used the Latin form for the register and everybody else used whatever the village said — and by the time surnames froze in the fourteenth century the short forms had become independent names. Mossie is a very late survival of that machinery, still running in the American South six hundred years later.

Not established
Two medieval names collapse into the same short form. Moses was in ordinary Christian use in England, worn down in speech to Moss, and it produced the surname Mosley among others. Maurice arrived with the Normans and was worn down the same way, which is why Irish families still use Mossie as the everyday form of Muiris. An American record from the 1880s will not say which of them a family had in mind, and by then it is quite likely neither.
How the name formed
- Moses in ordinary medieval Christian use
- Maurice arrives with the Normans
- English speech wears both down to Moss

Fashion outlook
Mossie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is warm and short and read correctly by everybody at sight.
- It works for a child of either sex, and the record carries it on both sides.
- Behind it stand two of the oldest names in European use.
- It shares its sound with a plant and, in several countries, with a mosquito.
- It reads as a pet form and people will look for a longer name.
- It belongs to the oldest layer of the American record and has had no revival.
