Morganne adds a French feminine ending to a Welsh name that has no feminine. Welsh does not mark names for sex the way French does, and Morgan has been given to men and women in Wales for as long as anybody can trace; the ending is an American solution to a problem Welsh does not have.

Where it comes from

The story of Morganne

The most famous historical Morgan sued a publisher and won. Henry Morgan, the Welsh privateer who sacked Panama, spent his later years as a wealthy planter and lieutenant governor of Jamaica, and when a Dutch surgeon who had sailed with him published a book describing him as a pirate who tortured prisoners, Morgan took the English publishers to court for libel. He won damages and forced changes to the text. Whether the book was accurate is a separate question that historians still argue over; what is not in doubt is that a man remembered as a pirate spent his retirement using the English legal system to defend his reputation, and succeeded.

Sea, plus an unsettled element

The first half is the Welsh word for the sea and nobody disputes it. The second is argued over, with a word for a circle or an edge the commonest proposal. The French-looking ending contributes nothing and is not French: no French name is spelled this way.

Morganne sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1995, with 87 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Morganne sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spoken name is completely established in English and never needs repeating.
  • Mo is a short, current, unisex everyday form.
  • There is a real Welsh name underneath with a documented history.
What to consider
  • Morgan is enormously commoner and the added letters will be dropped by nearly everybody.
  • The ending looks French and is not, which invites an explanation that is wrong.
  • It is closely dated to the last decades of the twentieth century.
