Where it comes from

The story of Montae

French place names beginning with Mont came to England with the Normans and became surnames: Montgomery is a place in Calvados named for a man called Gomeric, Montague is a pointed hill, Montfort a strong hill. Those surnames became American given names, and the opening syllable then detached and joined the workshop, giving Monte, Montell, Montez and Montae. Montana came by a different route, from the Spanish and Latin word for mountainous, chosen for the territory in 1864 by a congressman who liked the sound of it, and it has since become a girl's name in its own right. The whole family therefore traces to one Latin noun that English never borrowed directly.
