Where it comes from

The story of Mont

Cutting a three-syllable surname down to its first syllable and writing that on a birth certificate is a practice with almost no modern equivalent. Nineteenth-century American families did it constantly: Monroe became Roe, Montgomery became Mont, Washington became Wash, Jefferson became Jeff long before Jeff meant Jeffrey. It works because a surname given as a first name is already a gesture rather than a word — it is pointing at a family or a hero, and the pointing survives the clipping. What is lost is any way of knowing later what was being pointed at, which is why so many of these short American men's names cannot be traced past the census page they appear on.

A hill

Every candidate behind it — Montgomery, Montague, Montrose, Montford — begins with the French word for a hill, so that much is safe. Which long name a particular family cut it from is not recoverable, and some bearers may simply have been given the syllable.

Pronouncing Mont

MONT

One syllable. The French word it comes from is said without the final t, which American usage does not follow.

Mont sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1917, with 25 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Mont sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is as short as a name gets and completely unambiguous.
  • It has the plain sound of a period American name rather than an invention.
  • It lengthens easily if a longer version is ever wanted.
What to consider
  • It reads as a clipping, so a long form will be assumed.
  • The spelling is recorded for both sexes, and the recent handful have mostly been boys.
  • No single long name can be identified behind it.

Nobody names a baby alone.
