Where it comes from

Our story of Monette

One of the possible fronts is an island. The Romans called Anglesey by a name spelled like it, and Tacitus describes the invasion of the place in detail: the legions crossing the strait, the defenders on the shore, and the destruction of the sacred groves that made the island the center of a religion. The name stayed on the map in Welsh, produced a handful of personal names, and turns up occasionally in English as a woman's name with no explanation attached. Whether any American family had an island off the Welsh coast in mind is unlikely; but the word is real, older than any of the other candidates, and still there.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No parent can be established. The candidates have different origins and one of them has no agreed meaning of its own, so even choosing a parent would not settle the question. The ending contributes affection and smallness rather than sense, as French diminutives do.

How the name formed

  1. Several possible fronts from three languages
  2. A French diminutive ending available to all of them
  3. The two joined without a traceable source
  4. Monette in the registers from the early twentieth century

Pronouncing Monette

moh-NET

Two syllables with the stress at the back, which is what the French ending does wherever it is attached. American families sometimes move the stress forward, which the spelling does not support but nothing prevents.

Monette sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1962, with 40 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Monette sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Mona and Nettie are two complete names available from one certificate.
  • The sound is clear and needs no coaching from anybody.
  • The stress at the back gives the name a definite shape.
What to consider
  • No parent can be given, because three or four fit equally well.
  • Monetta and Monique are close enough to be written for it.
  • It is firmly of the middle of the twentieth century.
