The story of Mitch
Michel was the ordinary Norman French form of Michael and gave the English surname Mitchell in the usual way. At the same time Middle English had michel and mickle, meaning large, from Old English micel, which was also used as a byname for a big man and produced the same surname independently. Both routes are documented, both were productive, and by the time surnames were fixed the spellings had converged. The 1961 peak of the short form has a specific cause: a television program built around a choral conductor called Mitch ran on American network television from 1961, and the name appears in the birth records of exactly those years, which is the shape a broadcast cause always leaves.

Mitch's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Linwood climbed just as high around 1945, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Linwood's path sketches the road Mitch is walking now.
