Where it comes from

Our story of Missie

Names that come from forms of address are rarer than they sound. Most names are words for things or descriptions of people; this one is a word for speaking to somebody, which is a different grammatical animal. The title itself is a shortening of mistress, worn down through the seventeenth century and split into two words — one for married women and one for unmarried — with the diminutive of the second becoming a way of addressing a girl, often a little mockingly. A household that called a child Missie and then wrote it on a document turned a tone of voice into a legal name, and there is no way back from that to whatever she was christened.

Meaningnot established

Not established

There is no word behind it in the ordinary sense. Missy is a diminutive of the title miss, used to address a young woman, and it was given as a household name to children whose formal names were something else entirely. Which formal name a particular bearer had is not recoverable.

Missie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1968, with 38 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Missie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is warm and immediately friendly, as household names are.
  • It is short and impossible to mispronounce.
  • It is genuinely rare now.
What to consider
  • The word is still a form of address in American English and often a sharp one.
  • It reads as a nickname, so a formal name will be assumed.
  • The name belongs entirely to one American era.

Nobody names a baby alone.
