The story of Miraya
Meerabai was a Rajput noblewoman of the sixteenth century who left her marriage and her rank to compose devotional songs to Krishna, and those songs are still performed today. Her name became a common one for daughters because of her — a rarer thing than it sounds, since most Indian girls' names come from goddesses and abstractions rather than from historical women. Miraya is a modern lengthening of it, part of a wide current in Indian naming toward longer, vowel-open names such as Anaya and Aaradhya that read easily in English as well as in Hindi.
Meaningscholars disagree
inherited from Meera, whose own reading is unsettled
Miraya has no separate etymology; it extends Mira or Meera, and that name has several genuine sources which have never been separated in Indian use. Sanskrit mira is given as 'ocean' or as 'boundary'. Slavic mir means peace, and also world. Latin mirus, 'wonderful', stands behind the Spanish and Italian Mira. Arabic amira means princess. Indian families using Miraya are almost always standing on the Meera of the devotional poetry, which is a particular woman rather than an etymology.

mi-RAH-yah
Three syllables with the stress in the middle and a short first vowel. English speakers sometimes say muh-RYE-uh, reading the -aya as it sounds in Maya, which is a different vowel entirely.

The Linnette test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Miraya's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Linnette climbed just as high around 1967, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Linnette's path sketches the road Miraya is walking now.
Miraya sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Every sound in it exists in English, so it survives the crossing without damage.
- Mira stands behind it as a shorter and very widely known form.
- Sits comfortably in both Indian and American mouths, which few names of either tradition manage.
- It is a modern extension, so a page offering it a Sanskrit meaning is really offering Meera's.
- Miraya, Mirraya and Meeraya are all possible, and Maya and Mira are close enough to be confused with it.
