Miracle
Feminine · Latin roots · “a wonder”
Miracle is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 21,471 girls against 535 boys since 1880. See Miracle as a boy name
Behind the everyday English word sits the Latin miraculum, "object of wonder," built on the verb mirari, to wonder at — the same root that gave English admire, mirage and, by way of Old French, mirror. Four syllables that most people can spell after hearing them once, and a meaning nobody has to look up.

The story of Miracle
Latin miraculum passed into Old French as miracle and into Middle English with the same spelling it keeps today; in medieval England the "miracle plays" were dramas staged on the lives of the saints, and that is where the word did much of its early public work. As a given name, Miracle belongs to the long English habit of naming children directly from meaningful words — the tradition that produced Faith, Hope, Grace, Prudence and, more recently, Destiny and Serenity. It arrived in the American naming record in the twentieth century and has been used steadily since, most strongly in the South. Because it is a word rather than an inherited name, every language has its own version rather than a borrowed one — Spanish-speaking families reach the same idea through Milagros.

The Lawanda test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Miracle's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lawanda climbed just as high around 1977, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lawanda's path sketches the road Miracle is walking now.
Miracle sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is a word people already know, so it survives phone calls, roll calls and spelling out loud without correction.
- Sits inside a well-worn English tradition of word names — Faith, Hope, Grace, Destiny — so it reads as a type, not an invention.
- Has real short forms available in Mira and Mimi, both of which work on their own.
- The same idea carries into Spanish and Portuguese as Milagros and Milagres, useful in a bilingual family.
- The meaning is impossible to set aside. It is a statement about a child's arrival, and she will hear it commented on — sometimes sweetly, sometimes as a question about her birth — for a long time.
- Word names invite remarks that inherited names do not, and not every child enjoys being the occasion for a joke or a compliment at every introduction. Mira gives her somewhere plainer to stand if she wants it.
- She is very unlikely to meet another in her class or her school, which some children love and others would rather not be.
- The name is stepping back a little from its high point, so it will read as belonging to a particular stretch of years — recognizable, but not tied to any one generation for long.
