II

The names themselves

Where each name comes from

Aubree

elf ruler, or elf power

From the Germanic elements alb 'elf' and ric 'power, ruler', joined in the old name Alberich. Aubree carries that meaning through Aubrey, of which it is a respelling.

Alberich → Auberi → Aubrey → Aubree

How it traveled

The root is the Germanic Alberich, borne by the dwarf-king who guards the Nibelung hoard in medieval German legend. Norman French wore it down to Auberi, and Norman speakers brought it to England after 1066, where it settled as Aubrey and stayed a man's name for centuries — you can still find it on English maps and surnames.

Miracle

a wonder, a marvel; a wondrous event

From Latin miraculum, "object of wonder," from mirari, "to wonder at."

mirari (Latin) → miraculum (Latin) → miracle (Old French) → Miracle

How it traveled

Latin miraculum passed into Old French as miracle and into Middle English with the same spelling it keeps today; in medieval England the "miracle plays" were dramas staged on the lives of the saints, and that is where the word did much of its early public work. As a given name, Miracle belongs to the long English habit of naming children directly from meaningful words — the tradition that produced Faith, Hope, Grace, Prudence and, more recently, Destiny and Serenity.

Out loud, and in short

Aubree

AW-bree

Two syllables, stress on the first. Some speakers say OH-bree, closer to the French Aubry, but AW-bree is the standard American reading and the spelling encourages it.

  • Bree — The most common short form, and a long-established given name in its own right.
  • Aubs — Casual, used among friends and family rather than on paper.
  • Bri — An alternate spelling of the same short form; overlaps with Brianna and Briana.
  • Bee — An affectionate household short form, rarely used outside the family.

Miracle

MEER-uh-kul

Three syllables, stress on the first, exactly as the ordinary English word is said. No regional variation worth worrying about among English speakers.

  • Mira — The most common short form, and a long-established given name in its own right across several languages.
  • Mimi — Informal, family-and-friends register rather than anything that appears on paperwork.
  • Miri — Informal; also used as a short form of Miriam, so it can read either way.

The trade-offs, name by name

Aubree

Strengths

  • Spelled the way it sounds in English, so a child rarely has to teach anyone how to say it.
  • Comes with Bree ready-made — a short form that also works as a full given name on a resume or a nametag.
  • Sits on a documented line running back through Norman French to Germanic Alberich, nearly a thousand years of continuous use.

To consider

  • Aubrey is the spelling most people default to. Expect a lifetime of small corrections on forms, coffee cups and email addresses — manageable, but constant.
  • The name's wave is recent and concentrated, so it reads as belonging to a particular slice of American childhood rather than to any generation before it.
  • Aubrey is still used for men in Britain and in older American records. The -ee spelling reads as female in the US, but the parent name has two roads and someone will occasionally assume the other one.

Miracle

Strengths

  • It is a word people already know, so it survives phone calls, roll calls and spelling out loud without correction.
  • Sits inside a well-worn English tradition of word names — Faith, Hope, Grace, Destiny — so it reads as a type, not an invention.
  • Has real short forms available in Mira and Mimi, both of which work on their own.

To consider

  • The meaning is impossible to set aside. It is a statement about a child's arrival, and she will hear it commented on — sometimes sweetly, sometimes as a question about her birth — for a long time.
  • Word names invite remarks that inherited names do not, and not every child enjoys being the occasion for a joke or a compliment at every introduction. Mira gives her somewhere plainer to stand if she wants it.
  • She is very unlikely to meet another in her class or her school, which some children love and others would rather not be.
