Our story of Minnie
In the Dakota language, mni is water, and it opens a great many place names across the upper Midwest, including the state that takes its name from a river described as cloudy or sky-tinted water. Minnehaha is a waterfall in Minneapolis, and the second element is about the sound of falling water. Longfellow, writing his enormously popular poem, rendered the name as Laughing Water and gave it to a character, and that translation has been repeated ever since in guidebooks and on plaques. It is a lovely phrase and a loose one: the word is doing something closer to describing a rushing noise than a laugh. The name Minnie has no connection to any of it, but the coincidence sent a great many Victorian readers to the same three syllables.

Fashion outlook
Minnie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is warm and instantly understood, which very few names manage on a first hearing.
- Six letters and two syllables, never misspelled after one telling.
- It has a long documented run of independent use in the American record.
- One cartoon mouse has owned the name in the public mind for a century, and the association is total.
- It reads as a short form to some people, so formal settings will keep asking what it stands for.
- This spelling goes overwhelmingly to girls but is recorded for boys as well, so a form will occasionally guess wrong.
