Our story of Minette
Minette is the ore of Lorraine and Luxembourg: iron-bearing rock with too much phosphorus to be usable by the old smelting methods, and therefore worthless for most of history. Then a pair of cousins in England worked out a lining for the converter that removed the phosphorus, and overnight the largest iron deposit in western Europe became viable. Luxembourg built a steel industry on it and became, for a while, one of the richest countries per head on earth. The mines closed in the twentieth century, the pits filled with water, and the red rock country is now a nature reserve with a steel company headquarters at the end of it.

The French word is an affectionate term for a kitten, and the name may be built on Mina, Wilhelmina or Minerva. Nothing documents which, and the ore is a separate word that happens to match.

Fashion outlook
Minette sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Minnie and Nettie are both available as short forms and both are established.
- The stress is unmistakable, so it is rarely mispronounced on a first reading.
- It is short on paper and soft throughout.
- In French it is an affectionate word for a cat, which French speakers will hear first.
- Minetta and Minnetta are both in the record, so the spelling will be checked back with you.
- No origin is documented, so the meaning question has several candidates and no answer.
