The story of Milla
Slavic naming built compounds on mil freely — Ludmila is people-dear, Bogumila is God-dear — and the ending came loose as Mila and Milla. Quite separately, Italian and English speakers clip Camilla the same way. Milla has been registered under its own name in Scandinavian and Slavic records for a long time, and appears in American records from the nineteenth century onward.

dear, gracious
Slavic mil means dear or gracious and closes Ludmila, Bogumila and Dragomila. Separately Milla clips the Roman Camilla, from a word for a child who assisted at sacrifices. The two are unrelated and both produce this form.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
