Where it comes from

Our story of Mikia

Mica splits into sheets thin enough to see through and does not burn, which made it the glazing material of choice for anywhere that got hot: lantern panes, stove doors, furnace peepholes, the windows of early gas masks and aircraft. In Russia it was cut into large sheets and used for actual windows, which is why English sometimes called it Muscovy glass. The name is Latin and its origin is genuinely disputed: mica is the ordinary Latin word for a crumb or a grain, which fits how the mineral flakes, but the word appears to have been crossed at some point with micare, to flash or glitter, which fits how it looks. Mineralogists have argued for both since the eighteenth century. It is still used in electronics, still mined largely by hand, and much of that mining is done by children.

No source is documented. The front resembles half a dozen longer names and the ending is a free American suffix. A Korean car company and a Japanese element are both offered online as sources and neither has anything to do with it.

Mikia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1999, with 40 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Mikia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Five letters with no silent ones make it quick to write and simple to spell aloud.
  • Both halves detach as short forms and sound unrelated.
  • It is genuinely distinctive without being hard to say.
What to consider
  • Mikayla, Mikia and Makia will all be written for it.
  • Stress placement is unsettled, so strangers will say it two ways.
  • Neither element carries a meaning, so the origin question has a short answer.
