Where it comes from

The story of Mikhail

Michael is the archangel who leads the heavenly host and weighs souls, and one of only three angels named in the Hebrew Bible. Russian took Mikhail, which became one of the country's most-used names — Lermontov, Bulgakov, Gorbachev, Baryshnikov. Emigration brought it to America, where it is in current use.

Meaning

who is like God?

From the Hebrew Mikha'el — mi, 'who', ka, 'like', and El, 'God'. It is a rhetorical question. The archangel Michael uses it as a war cry against Satan in later tradition, which fits the grammar. The Hebrew is ordinary and the reading undisputed.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Mikhail went to 84 boys in 2025, but Mikail and Mikayil are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 136, which makes it the 792nd most-given boys’ name of the year — 1,075 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 12,559 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 20,334 for Mikhail itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
