Our story of Micole
In Giorgio Bassani's novel The Garden of the Finzi-Continis, Micol is the bright, elusive daughter of a Jewish family in Ferrara whose walled garden becomes a refuge for young people in the years before the war. Her name is the Italian form of Michal, a daughter of King Saul in the Hebrew Bible. Micole adds an e to that name and lands it beside the Nicoles and Michelles of American classrooms, a name that could have come from a novel or from a playground, and belongs to both.
