Micki
Feminine · “who is like God?”
Micki is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 2,654 girls against 33 boys since 1880.
Mickey has had a strange career in English. It became a word for a drugged drink, a word for an Irishman, a word for taking the rise out of somebody, and a mouse — and underneath all of it, it is the ordinary familiar form of one of the most-used names in the world.

The story of Micki
The slang uses come from the same place: the name was so common among Irish immigrants in nineteenth-century America and Britain that it became a stand-in for an Irishman, and from there it acquired every association attached to that stereotype. A Mickey Finn is a drink with something in it, named after a Chicago bar owner. Taking the mickey is British and its origin is disputed and probably rude. None of that touched the name itself, which went on being given to children throughout. Micki is the bare-i spelling of it, and the record gives it almost entirely to girls.

Fashion outlook
Micki sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is said correctly by everyone on first hearing.
- It serves several long names, which gives a family options.
- Five letters, two syllables, and nothing that has to be explained.
- The name has acquired a good deal of English slang, not all of it friendly.
- The spelling is recorded for boys as well as girls in the United States.
- It reads as a familiar form, and formal settings will look for something longer.
