The story of Mickenzie
Scottish Gaelic surnames change with the sex of the person who carries them: a man of the clan is MacCoinnich, 'son of Coinneach', but a woman is NicCoinnich, from nighean mhic, 'daughter of the son of'. English never took over that distinction, so when Mackenzie became an American girl's name it kept the Mac. The best-known Mackenzie of the twentieth century was a Canadian: William Lyon Mackenzie King, prime minister for more than twenty-one years, longer than anyone in the country's history, whose diaries revealed after his death that he had regularly consulted mediums and spoken with his dead mother. Mickenzie, with its i, is one of the spellings that followed the name's spread to daughters.
