Michiko
Feminine · “depends on the characters chosen”
For most of the twentieth century a Japanese girl's name ended in ko, the character for child: Michiko, Hanako, Yoko, Sachiko, Keiko. By the end of that century the ending had almost vanished from new births. Very few naming conventions anywhere have risen and fallen that completely inside a hundred years.

The story of Michiko
The ko ending, written with the character for child, was originally aristocratic and became universal in the Meiji and Taisho years, so that by the middle of the century a very large share of Japanese women's names ended in it. Then it stopped: it came to sound old-fashioned, and by the 1990s it had nearly disappeared from new registrations. Michiko reached American records with Japanese families early in the last century and again after the war, and it stayed in use here longer than the fashion lasted in Japan, which is what usually happens to a name that emigrates. The first half of the name can be written several ways, so two Michikos may not share a meaning at all.

depends on the characters chosen
Japanese names are written in kanji, and the same sound can be written many ways with different meanings. Michiko is commonly written with characters meaning beautiful, wise and child, or with a character meaning path or way plus child. The sound alone does not carry a meaning; the writing does, and the parents choose it.

mee-CHEE-koh
Four syllables in Japanese, said flat and even rather than with English stress: mi-chi-ko, each vowel short and clear. Americans usually put the weight on the second syllable, which is close enough to be understood.

The Oliver test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Michiko's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Oliver climbed just as high around 1905, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Oliver's path sketches the road Michiko is walking now.
Michiko sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is a real and completely ordinary Japanese name rather than an approximation of one.
- The vowels are pure and short, which makes it easy to say in Spanish and Italian as well.
- Michi works as a short form and is used in Japan itself.
- In Japan the name now reads as belonging to an older generation, which may or may not be the intention.
- Its meaning depends on characters that an American birth certificate cannot record.
- Four syllables and an unfamiliar shape means it will be repeated and spelled out often.
