Michial writes ial where the name has ael, and nothing in the sound changes. The ending is unstressed and reduced to almost nothing, so any pair of vowel letters there will do the same job; the standard spelling keeps the Hebrew shape and this one writes what the ear reports.

Where it comes from

The story of Michial

One of the best-known American spirituals was written down from the people who were singing it. Michael Row the Boat Ashore was collected on the Sea Islands off South Carolina during the Civil War, from freedmen on plantations the Union had taken, by a group of northerners who were there to run schools; it went into the first published collection of African American songs. The boat in it is a ferry across the river of death and the Michael is the archangel, who in that tradition does the rowing. What survives in campfire versions is a fragment of something considerably larger and sadder.

Meaning

Who is like God

A Hebrew question rather than a statement, and one that expects the answer nobody. Names of that shape were common and they work as compressed declarations. The ending is the shortened form of the divine name that closes a whole family of Hebrew names.

Pronouncing Michial

MY-kul

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The ch represents a Hebrew consonant that English gave up on, which is why it is a plain k here and a rasp in the original.

Fashion outlook

Michial sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Mike is available from the first day and needs no explanation anywhere.
  • The name underneath has been in continuous use for two thousand years.
  • The meaning is a complete sentence and easy to give a child.
What to consider
  • Michael is one of the commonest names in English and will be written instead every time.
  • The spelling reads as an error rather than a variant to most people.
  • It is strongly dated to the middle of the twentieth century in American records.
