Where it comes from

Our story of Michelene

Mont-Saint-Michel sits on a granite outcrop in a bay with one of the largest tidal ranges in Europe. At low water it stands in sand you can walk across; at high water it is an island. The tide moves fast enough across the flats that the old warnings about it outrunning a galloping horse are an exaggeration of something true, and the sands have quicksand in them. The abbey was built on top over several centuries, each level supporting the next, and it was reached on foot until a causeway was built. The causeway silted the bay, so a century later it was replaced with a bridge to let the water move again.

Fashion outlook

Michelene sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths

  • The name behind it is ancient and understood everywhere without explanation.
  • Three syllables with a clear stress carry well across a room.
What to consider
  • Micheline and Michelene will be confused by anybody who knows the French name.
  • It is close enough to Michelle in speech to be heard as it constantly.
  • No origin is documented for this form, so the meaning question belongs to the shorter name.
