Where it comes from

Our story of Meylin

Ours, offered as ours. Central American naming has produced a family of names ending in -lin and -lyn that are borrowed from English endings and spelled by Spanish rules — Meylin, Yeimy, Naydelin, Jeilin. They look Chinese or English to outsiders and read as entirely Honduran or Salvadoran at home. Chinese mei, beautiful, is a coincidence of sound that the spelling makes look deliberate, and it is worth naming without claiming.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source is established. Chinese mei means beautiful and opens Meiling and Meihua. The Mey- and -lin pieces of Latin American naming, which produced Meylin, Yeylin and Marlin, are the likelier source.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Lin is a complete short form in its own right.
  • Every letter is sounded, so Spanish speakers read it correctly at first sight.
  • It belongs clearly to a living Central American naming tradition.
What to consider
  • The stress differs between the Spanish and American readings.
  • Meylin, Meilyn and Maylin are all in use and none is dominant.
  • There is no documented meaning.
