Mettie
Feminine
Mettie belonged to a rhyming family. For most of the nineteenth century American women's names came in sets that differed by a single sound — Nettie, Hettie, Lettie, Bettie, Mettie — and the rhyme was the point: a household could have three of them and everybody could keep track.

The story of Mettie
The rhyming sets are one of the clearest patterns in nineteenth-century American naming and one of the least remarked on. Look at any census page from the 1880s and the women's names arrive in clusters: the -ie and -y endings on everything, the same two or three vowels in front of them, whole streets of Netties and Hatties and Lotties. It is the same instinct that produces the rhyming boys' names of the 2000s, four generations later and with different sounds. The mechanism has not changed at all: a shape catches, and everything that fits the shape comes along with it.

The likeliest parents are Martha and Matilda, both of which produced Mattie, and this spelling sits between that and the rhyming set it belongs to. It cannot be assigned to one source. That is normal for pet forms of the period: they were produced in speech, attached to whichever longer name was in the house, and written down by a clerk who had no interest in the question.

Fashion outlook
Mettie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is warm, short and read correctly by everybody at sight.
- It belongs to a set of names that are being rediscovered one by one.
- It is genuinely unrepeated now while having been ordinary once.
- It will be heard as Betty, Hettie and Mattie by nearly everyone.
- It reads as a pet form and people will look for a longer name.
- There is no meaning to give her and two candidate parents.
