Where it comes from

The story of Merton

Walter de Merton founded Merton College at Oxford in 1264 on the model of his own priory, and it is among the oldest colleges in England. The place name became a surname and then, in nineteenth-century America, a given name, alongside Milton, Morton and Marlon. Merton peaked in American records around 1918.

Meaning

settlement by the lake

From the Old English mere, 'lake' or 'pool', and tun, 'settlement' or 'enclosure'. Both elements are among the commonest in English place names and the compound is transparent. Merton in Surrey, now part of London, is the original.

Merton sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1920, with 150 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Merton sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is concrete and belongs to a very large family of English place names.
  • One of the oldest Oxford colleges carries the name.
  • Two firm syllables that carry well against any surname.
What to consider
  • Morton and Milton are both close enough to cause confusion.
  • It reads as a surname before it reads as a given name.
  • It is strongly period-coded to the early twentieth century.
