Where it comes from

The story of Mertie

Botanical names became fashionable for girls in the nineteenth century — Rose, Lily, Ivy, Daisy, Myrtle — and Myrtle rose sharply through the 1880s and 1890s. Pet forms followed, and American spelling did not hold to a single shape: Myrtie, Mertie and Mirtie all appear in the same registers. Mertie peaked around 1885 and faded with the whole plant-name fashion.

Meaningscholars disagree

myrtle

Read as a form of Myrtle or Myrtie, the meaning is the Greek myrtos, the evergreen shrub sacred to Aphrodite and used in Greek and Roman wedding wreaths. Read instead as a clipping of Mercy or Merta, it carries a different sense entirely. The registers do not distinguish them.

Mertie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1919, with 44 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Mertie has already lived its whole cycle: it rose, had its era, and has stepped off the charts. The fashion question is behind it — what lies ahead is the waiting room where revivals begin, once a name's first generation has grown distant enough for it to sound fresh again.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The plant behind it carries a documented three-thousand-year symbolic history.
  • Short and soft, and easy for a young child to say.
  • It is genuinely rare while being entirely traditional in the registers.
What to consider
  • The parent name is firmly out of fashion, which affects the short form.
  • Several spellings of the same sound are in the records.
  • It is strongly period-coded to the late nineteenth century.
