Where it comes from

Our story of Merrilyn

The forked bone in a bird's breast was called a merrythought in English for several centuries, and the name comes from the custom rather than the anatomy: two people pull, the one left holding the longer piece makes a wish, and the cheerful thought is the point. Wishbone is the American replacement and it won completely, to the extent that merrythought now sounds like something invented for a children's book. The custom itself is much older than either word and was recorded in Britain long before it reached America. The bone, incidentally, is a fused pair of collarbones, and in living birds it works as a spring during flight.

Marilyn was a twentieth-century construction whose elements were never documented. This spelling may respell it or may join merry to the Lyn ending, and the record does not say.

Fashion outlook

Merrilyn sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

  • Merri and Lyn are both available as short forms and both stand alone.
  • The sound is entirely familiar, so it is never a puzzle to say.
  • Three syllables with a strong front stress carry well across a room.
What to consider
  • Marilyn and Merrilyn will be confused by anybody catching the name once.
  • The first element is also an ordinary English adjective, which people will notice.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has two candidates and no answer.
