Where it comes from

The story of Meriah

The pronunciation with a long second vowel was standard English for centuries and then quietly became rustic and was dropped, surviving mostly in song and in the King James place names. What brought it back was a wind. A musical set in the gold rush gave a song to a wind called Maria, and the lyric spells the name that way and rhymes it as Mariah, which is how English had always said it — so a piece of stage writing preserved and then popularized a pronunciation the language had abandoned. This spelling takes one more step away, swapping the first vowel for an e, which is the cheapest way there is to make a familiar name look like a new one.

The name behind it is Mary, and the Hebrew original has never been explained — bitter, beloved and an Egyptian reading have all been argued for a very long time. The respelled front adds nothing and changes nothing except how the name looks on paper.

Fashion outlook

Meriah sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It carries one of the oldest names in the world in a form that sounds entirely modern.
  • The rhythm is strong and the name resists being cut short.
  • It offers short forms that are complete names themselves.
What to consider
  • Mariah is the spelling everybody knows and hers will be corrected to it.
  • The first vowel invites a reading as Maria, which is a different name in sound.
  • There is no settled meaning to hand her, at any point in the chain.
