Where it comes from

Our story of Mennie

A menagerie was originally a matter of husbandry. The French ménagerie came from ménage, a household, and it meant the management of a domestic farm — the poultry, the pigeons, the rabbits, the stock kept around a country house. It shifted to mean the animals themselves, then specifically the ornamental or exotic ones a wealthy household kept, and by the eighteenth century it meant a private collection of wild animals, which the great houses of Europe competed over. The traveling menagerie followed, then the public zoo, which is a nineteenth-century idea built on the older private one. The root is the same as in ménage à trois, which is also about a household, and in the English word manage, which came through Italian and is about handling horses.

It may respell Minnie, which itself shortens Wilhelmina, Mary or Minerva, or it may be an independent build. The short form was registered alone, which leaves nothing to trace back to.

Fashion outlook

Mennie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables with front stress is easy to say and quick.
  • Six letters with no silent ones make it simple to spell aloud.
  • It is genuinely rare and belongs to almost nobody now living.
What to consider
  • Minnie, Mennie and Nennie will all be confused with one another.
  • It reads as a nickname, and people will ask what it stands for.
  • Nothing records which longer name it belongs to, so the answer has to be a family one.
