Where it comes from

The story of Melvin

The most consequential man to carry the name spelled it his own way on purpose. He invented the library classification system that is still in use in most of the world's public libraries, and he was also a committed spelling reformer who thought English orthography was a national waste of time. He acted on it: he cut the final e from his own first name and simplified his surname, and signed himself accordingly for years. He also tried Dui for the surname before settling back. It is one of the few cases of a man applying a theory about language to his own name and living with the result.

Meaningscholars disagree

smooth brow, or from a Norman village

The Gaelic option gives a description of a person; the Norman one gives a place. They are unrelated to each other and produce nearly the same word, which is why the argument has not been settled.

Fashion outlook

Melvin sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Mel is a short form that works in any register and at any age.
  • The spelling is unambiguous and never needs repeating.
  • It has held a place in American use for the whole length of the record.
What to consider
  • Its peak generation is far enough back to date the name clearly.
  • The origin is genuinely unsettled between two unrelated candidates.
  • The record holds girls as well, and the girl is much the smaller side.
