Where it comes from

The story of Melodye

Melos in Greek is a limb or a member of the body, and it is also a phrase of a song, a musical member. The metaphor is so old that it is impossible to say which sense came first: a tune divided into limbs, or a body divided into tunes. English still has the trace of it in melodic and melisma. The ending is a separate story. Old English had a letter, thorn, for the th sound, and when printing arrived the type came from continental foundries that had no thorn in the case. Printers substituted the letter that looked nearest, which was y, so the printed the became ye, and a later age that had forgotten the reason took ye for a quaint old word and started using it on purpose. The -ye in Melodye is a descendant of that misunderstanding: an ending that signals age and is in fact modern.

Meaning

Fashion outlook

Melodye sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The word is in everyone's vocabulary, so the name is never mysterious and never mispronounced.
  • The meaning is settled, pleasant and easy to explain to a child.
  • Mel is available as a short form from the first day.
What to consider
  • The -ye ending will be dropped by almost everyone writing it down, and the name will appear as Melody on most paperwork.
  • A word used as a name invites a certain amount of gentle commentary, especially in music classes.
  • The spelling reads as belonging to one particular stretch of the last century, which places the name in time.
