Where it comes from

The story of Melenie

Helen Porter Mitchell, an Australian soprano, took the stage name Melba from Melbourne, her home city, and became famous enough that chefs named dishes after her. Peach Melba — peaches, vanilla ice cream and raspberry purée — was made for her by Escoffier at the Savoy, and Melba toast, the thin dried bread, is also attributed to him and to a period when she was ill and eating lightly. The naming of dishes after singers and dancers was a normal courtesy of the period, and most of those names have gone; these two survived because the food was good. A city named a nickname, a nickname named a pudding, and the pudding has outlasted the recordings.

Meaning

black

From the Greek word for black or dark, the same element that gives melanin and melancholy. The name belonged to two Roman women, grandmother and granddaughter, who gave away one of the largest fortunes in the late empire.

Fashion outlook

Melenie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is entirely familiar, so nobody has to be taught it.
  • Front stress on three syllables is a comfortable English rhythm.
  • Both cuts produce short forms and each is usable on its own.
What to consider
  • Melanie, Melany and Melonie will all be written for it.
  • The changed vowel is inaudible, so the spelling must be given aloud every time.
  • The meaning is black, which some families will want to know in advance.
