Where it comes from

The story of Melaney

The word turns up in an unexpected place on the map. In the eighteen-thirties a French explorer, dividing the Pacific into regions for the convenience of European geography, coined Melanesia for the islands whose people he judged darkest, from the same Greek root, alongside Polynesia for the many islands and Micronesia for the small ones. Two of those three names describe geography and one describes the inhabitants' appearance, which tells you something about how the exercise was conducted. The names stuck, are still the standard terms, and are now used by the people who live there. The personal name traveled a quieter route, through Roman Christianity and French, and the spelling here is a twentieth-century American respelling of the ending.

Meaning

Black, dark

Greek melas, black or dark, which is also the word behind melancholy and melanin. Melody is from melos, a tune, and Melina is from meli, honey; the three Greek roots are unrelated and only sound similar once English has flattened their vowels. A name meaning dark was ordinary in Greek and referred to hair or complexion without any of the associations English attaches.

Fashion outlook

Melaney sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spoken name is completely established in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.
  • Mel and Laney are two short forms that sound nothing alike and belong to different decades.
  • The meaning is concrete, ancient and connected to ordinary English words a child can check.
What to consider
  • Melanie is the standard spelling and this one will be read as a slip.
  • It will be confused in speech with Melody and Melinda, neither of which is related.
  • The ey ending dates the spelling to the middle of the last century in American ears.
