Meika
Feminine
German and Dutch read ei as the vowel in eye, and ie as the vowel in see — exactly the opposite of what an English reader expects. So Meika is MY-ka in the countries it comes from and MAY-ka in the one it arrived in, and both sets of speakers think they are reading it correctly.

From Maria to Meika
The story of Meika
Northern Europe wore Maria down further than anywhere else. Dutch and Frisian produced Mia, Mieke, Meike, Marijke, Mariken and Mies; German added Mareike and Maike; Scandinavian gave Maja and Mia. Most of them are diminutives that became independent names, and one of them, Mia, is now among the most given names in the United States without most people knowing what it is short for. Meike belongs to that set and reached American records with Dutch and German families. The a-for-e at the end is an American adjustment, made because an English reader treats a final e as silent and would lose the second syllable entirely.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Meika is a form of Meike, a Dutch and Frisian short form of Maria, and Maria has no established meaning. Some Dutch families take it instead from mei, the month of May. The name is also given in Japan, written with characters chosen by the parents, in which case the meaning depends on the characters and not on the sound.

MY-kah
Two syllables, stress on the first, if the ei is read as Dutch or German. MAY-kah is the English reading of the same letters and is what most Americans will say. Both are in genuine use and the spelling settles neither.

The Sheela test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Meika's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Sheela climbed just as high around 1959, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Sheela's path sketches the road Meika is walking now.
Meika sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Five letters, two syllables, and no consonant cluster.
- It is a real name in Dutch, Frisian and German rather than a coinage.
- Mei and Mika both work as short forms and both stand alone.
- The first vowel is read two ways depending on whether the reader is thinking in English or in Dutch.
- Mika, Meeka and Meike are all in use and all close.
- The parent name has no established meaning, so there is no simple answer to give.
