Mechele respells a French name using letters that, in English, say something else entirely. The ch at its center is the French one, and an English reader meeting the word cold has no way of knowing that. The syllable at the front happens to be the beginning of a Greek word that gave English both machine and mechanic.

How old is the name Mechele?

Mechele first appears in US birth records in 1947 — 78 years ago. The typical Mechele alive today was born around 1968, making them about 57 years old. About 700 people named Mechele are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Mechele most popular?

Mechele peaked in 1966, reaching #1463 nationally. See the whole 1966 chart.

Where it comes from

Our story of Mechele

The Greek word for a machine originally meant a contrivance or a device, and the most famous one in the ancient world stood beside a stage. Greek theaters used a crane — a swinging beam with a harness — to lift an actor over the playing area so that a god could appear above the human characters and settle a plot that had run out of road. The Latin phrase deus ex machina describes exactly that piece of equipment: the god from the crane. Critics were complaining about it almost as soon as it existed; Aristotle thought a plot ought to resolve itself out of its own material. The phrase survives as a term of criticism for endings that arrive from nowhere, and almost nobody using it knows they are describing a piece of stage machinery with ropes and a counterweight.

Not established

The French name behind this one is a feminine of Michael, whose Hebrew meaning is documented. This spelling, though, cannot be assigned: Michelle, Mechelle, Machelle and Meshell are all in the record together, and nothing shows which of them it respells or whether it was built straight from the sound.

Pronouncing Mechele

muh-SHELL

Two syllables with the stress at the back. The ch says sh because the name is French; nothing in the English spelling system would tell a reader that, which is why this version gets mispronounced on sight.

Mechele sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1966, with 57 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Mechele sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is entirely familiar even though the spelling is not.
  • Shelly works from childhood onward and needs no explanation.
  • Back stress gives a two-syllable name a definite shape.
What to consider
  • Michelle is overwhelmingly commoner and will be written by default.
  • Readers who have not heard the name will try MEK-uh-lee or MEE-shell.
  • Nothing records which spelling it came from, so there is no origin to give beyond the family's.
