Mckinzie
Feminine · “son of Kenneth”
Mckinzie carries a contraction most people do not notice. The Mc at the front is not a separate word but a shortened form of Mac, and older records write it with an apostrophe or a raised c to show that something has been left out. The prefix means son of, which is a fact that stops being noticeable the moment such a name is given to a daughter.

The story of Mckinzie
The most famous carrier of this surname in the Highlands is not a person anyone can date. The Brahan Seer is a figure of Highland legend, said to have seen the future through a stone with a hole in it, and to have predicted a long list of things including the emptying of the glens and the coming of the railways. The prophecies were collected and published in the nineteenth century, well after most of the predicted events, which is the usual difficulty with prophecy. Whether he existed at all is disputed by historians. What is certain is that the name attached to him was already among the largest in the northern Highlands, and that when Scottish surnames began being used as American first names it was among the first to make the crossing.
Meaning
son of Kenneth
The surname means the son of a man whose Gaelic name English renders as Kenneth, and the derivation is not in dispute. The base name itself is one that English merged from two separate Gaelic originals, so the meaning behind the meaning is doubled. The z in the modern spelling is a historical accident: it stands for a letter that Scots scribes wrote and English printers could not reproduce.
How the name formed
- A Gaelic patronymic meaning son of Kenneth
- Written Mac and then contracted to Mc
- Adopted as an American first name for daughters
- Mckinzie among a dozen respellings
Related forms: MacCoinnich
Pronouncing Mckinzie
muh-KEN-zee
Three syllables with the stress in the middle and the prefix reduced almost to nothing. The z is said as a z, though the letter it replaced stood for a completely different sound, closer to a y.
