Mckinley comes from a Gaelic family name, Mac Fhionnlaigh, carried out of the Scottish Highlands and into the wider English-speaking world by generations of emigrants. Said aloud it has a running, three-beat rhythm with the weight in the middle — muh-KIN-lee — and it shortens neatly to Kinley or Mac. It is one of the surnames that arrived on American girls' name lists in the late twentieth century and stayed.

The story of Mckinley
The root is Fionnlagh, an old Gaelic given name that also gave English Finlay and Findlay. In the Highlands it became a family name, Mac Fhionnlaigh — son of Fionnlagh — anglicized in dozens of ways, McKinlay and McKinley among them. Scottish and Ulster emigration carried those spellings across the Atlantic, where McKinley became a well-established American surname and, in the twentieth century, a presidential one. Its move to the front of the name — first as a surname-style given name, then chiefly for girls — belongs to the recent American habit of doing exactly that, and Mckinley without the interior capital is the form that took hold on the charts.
Meaning
son of Fionnlagh, a Gaelic name meaning "fair hero"
The first element is Gaelic fionn, "fair, white." The second, laogh, is read as "hero" or "warrior" in the personal name, though its plain-word sense is "calf" — a shift that happened long before the surname formed.

The Valarie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Mckinley's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Valarie climbed just as high around 1964, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Valarie's path sketches the road Mckinley is walking now.
Mckinley sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Traces an unbroken line from a Gaelic personal name through a Highland surname to a modern American given name.
- Has ready-made short forms — Kinley, Mac — one of which stands alone as a name in its own right.
- Familiar as a surname to nearly everyone, so the sound needs no explanation even when the given name is new to someone.
- Rare enough as a first name that a child is unlikely to share it in a classroom.
- The capitalization is a lifelong small nuisance: Mckinley, McKinley and MacKinley all circulate, and autocorrect has opinions. Deciding on one form early, and writing it that way consistently, saves a lot of correcting later.
- It reads as a girl's name in current American use, but the same spelling is still given to boys, and it remains a common surname — expect the occasional assumption to be corrected.
- The strongest association for many adults is President William McKinley and the Alaskan peak that carried his name for a century. That link is neutral for most people, but it is there.
- The name's whole run is recent, so almost everyone who has it is young. There is no older generation of Mckinleys to make it feel long-settled yet.
