The Sobieski Stuart brothers turned up in Scotland in the 1820s with a manuscript they said had belonged to a sixteenth-century tailor, listing the tartans of every clan. They published it, the clan chiefs adopted it enthusiastically, and the mills wove to it. Scholars demolished it within a generation — the manuscript has never been produced, the language is wrong, the brothers' claim to royal descent was invented — and it made no difference at all. The tartans are now genuinely traditional, in the sense that people have been wearing them for two hundred years, which is how tradition works.
