Where it comes from

Our story of Maurilio

Latin Maurus gave Europe a great deal. It produced the personal names Maurice, Mauro, Mauricio and this one. It produced moreno and moro as words for dark-complexioned, and the Spanish and Italian surnames built on them. It produced the English morris dance, which is very probably moorish dance, a label attached in the fifteenth century to a style of performance thought to be exotic, with the blackened faces that some sides still argue about. And it produced the color maroon by a separate route through the chestnut. One Roman geographical adjective, four hundred descendants, and almost nobody hears the connection.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The Latin Maurus meant a Moor, an inhabitant of Roman North Africa, and that is documented. Whether this particular elaborated form comes from a specific saint or from Mauricio is not recorded.

Fashion outlook

Maurilio sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Mauri is a ready short form that Spanish and Italian households both recognize.
  • Four open syllables make it unmistakable when spoken.
  • It is entirely ordinary in Italy and Latin America and genuinely rare in the United States.
What to consider
  • Four syllables is a lot for an American form and it will be shortened by other people first.
  • English readers will say MOR-ih-lee-oh, which is the main correction.
  • The name's origin is a word for a people, which is worth being able to explain.
