Matix

Masculine

#6143 in the U.S.given to only a few children a year
rare14 boys in 2025

Matix ends in the letter that defined American boys' naming in the 2000s. What distinguishes it from Jaxon and Braxton is that here the x is terminal rather than medial, which is a different and rarer position — English has very few names ending in x, and each of them is conspicuous. Its peak is 2010.

Where it comes from

Our story of Matix

A terminal x behaves differently from a medial one. In Jaxon and Braxton the letter is buried and does purely visual work; in Felix, Rex, Max, Knox, Phoenix and Hendrix it is the last thing said and the last thing seen, which makes it a much louder choice. English has almost no native names ending in x — the ones that exist are Latin, like Felix and Rex, or surnames like Knox and Hendrix — so the ending reads as either classical or hard-edged and modern, and rarely as anything in between. Matix picks up both signals at once: the front sounds like Matthew, the ending sounds like Felix or Hendrix, and the name lands somewhere the record has very few other examples of.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No documented source. The name is most plausibly built from Mateo or Matthias with an x ending, in which case it would descend at some distance from Hebrew Mattityahu, 'gift of Yahweh'. But no route can be shown. It is equally readable as a construction on the -ix ending found in Felix, Phoenix and Hendrix, or as a respelling of Matrix. Any gloss offered for it is invented.

Matix sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2010, with 49 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Matix went to 14 boys in 2025, but Mattix is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 38, which makes it the 890th most-given boys’ name of the year — 5,253 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 44,949 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 122,005 for Matix itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
