Where it comes from

The story of Marzella

Marcellus was a family name of the Roman nobility, and Marcella, its feminine, passed into the Christian stock of names and on into Italian, Spanish and English. German took in a great many Latin words at a time when c before e and i was said ts, and it wrote that sound with z, so that cella became Zelle and circus Zirkus. Marzella looks like Marcella put through that rule; whether it reached American records by that road or was simply spelled by ear, nothing records.

Meaningscholars disagree

of Mars, or manly

Marcella is the feminine of Marcellus, a Roman diminutive of Marcus. Marcus is usually connected with Mars, the Roman god; a link with Latin mas, male, has also been proposed, and neither has displaced the other.

Fashion outlook

Marzella sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Carries the long Roman history of Marcella.
  • Three clear syllables, easy to say once heard.
  • Zella sits inside it as a short form.
What to consider
  • It will be corrected to Marcella and the z questioned, so the family should expect to explain it.
  • Anyone used to German may say the z as ts; English speakers will say it as z, and either is understood.
