Maryssa
Feminine · “a contraction of Maria and Luisa”
Maryssa is Marissa with a y where the i was, and the swap does something the speller may not have intended. It writes a second, entirely separate name into the middle of the word. Marissa contains no Mary and never did; it is an Italian contraction, of the kind that runs two names together and keeps a piece of each, and the piece it kept came from somewhere else altogether.

The story of Maryssa
Italian families gave daughters two names and then said them as one, and the language obliged by contracting the result: Maria plus Luisa becomes Marisa, Maria plus Rosa becomes Marisa's cousin Marisa Rosa and then Marosa, and so on through a long list. These contractions then went out on their own as independent names, which is why Italy has a stock of women's names that look ancient and are in fact about a century old. Marisa crossed to America and doubled its s, in the ordinary American way of guarding a short vowel, and became Marissa. The y spelling arrived later still. What it does is insert Mary, visibly and permanently, into a name that arrived without it, so that a great many people will assume a connection to a grandmother's name that is not there. Respellings that create a false family resemblance are common, and they are among the most durable changes a name can undergo.
Meaningscholars disagree
a contraction of Maria and Luisa
The most commonly accepted account makes the parent name an Italian shortening of a double name, which is how Italian produced a whole family of such names. A competing account ties it to a Latin word for the sea, which is where the popular gloss star of the sea comes from, and that reading is not supported by the way the name actually appears in Italian records. Either way, the y in this spelling adds nothing to the meaning. It changes only what the name looks like it is made of.

Fashion outlook
Maryssa sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The sound is entirely familiar, so it is never mispronounced regardless of how it is spelled.
- Rissa is a genuinely distinctive short form that is not shared with a dozen other names.
- The spelling gives a visible link to Mary for families who want one, whatever the etymology says.
- Marissa is the spelling almost everyone will default to, and correcting it is a lifelong job.
- The name looks like it contains Mary and does not, which is worth knowing before it becomes a family story.
