The story of Martino
Martin of Tours was born around 316 in Pannonia, served in the Roman army, and according to the tradition cut his cloak in two to share with a beggar at the gate of Amiens, then dreamed of Christ wearing the half. He left the army saying he was a soldier of Christ and could not fight, and became bishop of Tours. His cult was enormous in Frankish Gaul — his cloak, the cappella, gave us the word chapel and the word chaplain. Italian Martino, Spanish Martin and French Martin all descend from it. American use of the Italian form follows Italian migration.
