The English word chapel comes from a cloak. Martin of Tours cut his in half for a beggar at the gate of Amiens, the surviving half became a relic of the Frankish kings, the little building that housed it was called a cappella, and the priest who kept it was the chaplain. All of it from one man's coat.

Where it comes from

The story of Martine

Martin of Tours was a conscript in the Roman cavalry who gave half his cloak to a freezing beggar, dreamed that night of Christ wearing it, and afterwards refused to fight. He became a bishop, and after his death the half-cloak was kept by the Frankish kings as their most important relic and carried into battle. The Latin for a short cloak is cappa, and the diminutive cappella meant both the relic and the tent or room built to hold it. From that room English has chapel, and from its custodian, chaplain. Martine is the French feminine, ordinary in France, Belgium and the Netherlands, and it reached American records with families from all three.

Meaning

of Mars

From Latin Martinus, an adjective formed on Mars, the Roman god of war. That is the whole derivation, and it produces an oddity: the most famous Martin in Christian history was a soldier who left the army because he would not fight, and his name means belonging to the war god.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Latin meaning and a documented fourth-century bearer with a story attached.
  • The same spelling in French and Dutch, and only one letter from the Italian and Spanish.
  • Tina works at once and is a full name of its own.
What to consider
  • Americans reliably add a syllable at the end, which turns it into Martina.
  • The meaning is of the war god, which sits oddly with the saint the name actually recalls.
  • The very few boys given this spelling will be read as girls on paper.
