The verb to marry came through French from the Latin maritare, built on the word for a husband, and it has been in English since the thirteenth century doing exactly the job it does now. The name arrived by a completely different road — Hebrew into Greek into Latin into every European language — and has no connection to marriage, husbands or anything of the kind. The coincidence is pure spelling. It becomes visible only in a version of the name that doubles the r, which is what the standard spellings avoid doing. English is full of these near-misses, and they matter for names specifically: a spelling change made for the look of it can put a word inside a name that was never there, and readers will notice the word before they notice the name.
