Marquitta doubles a t and borrows a Spanish ending, and no language in the name would write it this way. Spanish makes Marquita with one t; Italian would hold a doubled one longer than English does; and English has no reason for the doubling at all, since the vowel before it is already short.

Where it comes from

The story of Marquitta

The feminine of the title has done a surprising amount of work in English. A marquise is a marchioness; it is also a shape of gemstone cut, a long pointed oval said to have been commissioned to resemble a particular courtier's mouth; and it is the origin of the word marquee, which came from the large tent set up for a marquise at a field encampment, was misheard in English as a plural, and was reanalysed into a singular. So the word for a woman married to a border lord now means a canopy over a theater entrance and a cut of diamond, and the path from one to the other runs through a tent and a spelling mistake.

Little marquis, loosely

The front is a French title of nobility that American naming took up as a name and then used as raw material. The ending is the Spanish diminutive. The combination is not a word or a name in either language, and it means something like a small holder of a border province, which nobody intended.

Fashion outlook

Marquitta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The rhythm is easy and every sound in it is available to an English speaker.
  • Quita and Marq are two short forms in different languages and registers.
  • The front half has a real history that can be checked.
What to consider
  • Marquita with one t is the Spanish form and will be written instead.
  • The doubling belongs to no language in the name and will be corrected by speakers of all of them.
  • It is closely dated to one American generation.
