Where it comes from

The story of Marquetta

The French surname belongs to a Jesuit who did a great deal of hard traveling and very little converting. He set out from the upper lakes with a fur trader and five men in two canoes, went down the Wisconsin into the Mississippi, and followed it far enough south to establish that it emptied into the Gulf rather than into the Pacific — which was the open question, and which settled the geography of the continent for Europeans. He turned back before the mouth to avoid the Spanish, made a second journey, and died at thirty-seven on the shore of Lake Michigan. A university, a county and a good many towns carry the name.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The front may be a French surname, or the Spanish word for a small marquise, and the two are related but not the same. The Italian ending contributes smallness rather than sense. Nothing certain can be reported.

mar-KET-uh

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The que is said as a plain k, which is what French does with it and English does not always expect.

Fashion outlook

Marquetta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Etta sits inside it as a short form with an entirely separate character.
  • The rhythm is even and the name is comfortable at length.
  • The spelling is distinctive without containing anything hard to say.
What to consider
  • Marquita and Marketta both appear and the spelling gets queried.
  • No meaning can be given, because the front element cannot be identified.
  • It reads clearly as belonging to a particular American generation.
