Marley
Masculine · “clearing' or 'woodland meadow”

Marley began as a patch of English woodland — a handful of villages in Kent, Devon and Yorkshire whose names end in the Old English word for a clearing. From there it became a surname, and from a surname a first name, carried out of England and around the world. Two syllables, both open and easy, with the same unhurried ending that Hayley and Riley share.

The story of Marley
English place names came first, then the surname formed from them in the ordinary medieval way — a family known by where they had lived. It stayed a surname for centuries, familiar enough to English readers that Dickens could hang a ghost on it in A Christmas Carol in 1843, and later carried worldwide by the Jamaican musician Bob Marley. The move to a first name is far more recent, part of the broad American habit of promoting surnames, and Marley arrived alongside Riley, Hadley and Presley. The memoir Marley & Me and the film made from it pushed the sound further into general use.
Meaningscholars disagree
'clearing' or 'woodland meadow', with a disputed first element
The second half is not in doubt: Old English lēah, a clearing or woodland glade, sits at the end of hundreds of English place names. The first half differs by village — readings include gemǣre, 'boundary', and mearþ, 'marten', giving 'boundary clearing' or 'marten wood'. Several separate places named Marley fed the same surname, so more than one origin is genuinely in play.

The Deric test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Marley's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Deric climbed just as high around 1970, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Deric's path sketches the road Marley is walking now.
Marley sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The pronunciation is obvious on sight — nobody hesitates over it, in English or in most other languages.
- A spelling the world already knows from a famous surname, so it is rarely questioned as a name.
- Works unchanged for a boy or a girl, with no separate masculine or feminine form to choose between.
- Two syllables ending in an open vowel, which sits easily after most one-syllable surnames.
- Belongs to a large, settled family of English place-and-surname names, so it never sounds invented.
- Marlee, Marleigh and Marly all exist and all sound identical, so expect to spell it aloud fairly often — this is the mild, lifelong kind of nuisance rather than a real problem.
- Bob Marley is the first association for many people, which some parents want and others do not. It reads as homage on a child whose family has a connection, and as coincidence otherwise.
- The dog in Marley & Me left a mark, and a few people will mention it. It fades quickly once there is an actual child attached to the name.
- Most Marleys in the US are girls, so a boy named Marley will be assumed female on paper now and then — worth knowing, though the spelling itself has never been gendered.
