The story of Markus
Marcus was among the few given names available to Roman men, so common that it belonged to Cicero and to the emperor Marcus Aurelius alike. Greek-speaking Christians wrote it Markos, and the evangelist Mark carried it through the early Church and into medieval Europe, where Venice took him as patron and built San Marco over his name. As it settled into the northern languages — German, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, Estonian — the Latin c hardened into a k, and Markus became the standard local form. It reached American records in the early twentieth century with German and Scandinavian families, and has been quietly present ever since.
