Markia
Feminine · “of Mars”
Markia looks like Marcia and is built differently. Marcia is inherited: a Roman family name that came down through Latin without anybody assembling it. Markia is made, from Mark plus a feminine ending, in a country and a century where that is a normal thing to do. The two arrive at nearly the same sound by completely different routes, and only one of them has a Roman pedigree.

The story of Markia
The reason Venice is full of lions is that Venetian merchants stole a body. In the ninth century two of them took the relics of Mark the Evangelist out of Alexandria, which was under Muslim rule, and got them past inspection by packing the container with pork, which the inspectors would not touch. The relics went into the basilica, the city adopted the evangelist as its patron, and his symbol, the winged lion, went onto every flag, gate and public building the republic ever built, from the Adriatic to Cyprus. It is one of the most successful pieces of civic branding in history and it began with a theft and a load of pork. The name itself was ordinary Roman long before any of that, one of a very small set of first names that Roman families used at all.

of Mars, at one remove
The base name descends from the Roman name Marcus, which belonged to the god of war, and that much is settled. Whether this name inherits it depends on whether it was built on Mark or is a respelling of Marcia, and the k points to the first. A feminine built directly on a man's name carries his name's meaning the way a daughter carries a father's surname: really, but at a remove, and without any of the grammar the Latin feminine had.
How the name formed
- Marcus, a Roman name belonging to the war god
- Mark as the English form of it
- Marcia inherited, Markia assembled
- Markia in American registers with a k

Pronouncing Markia
MAR-kee-uh
Three syllables with the stress on the first. Marcia in American English is usually two, MAR-shuh, so the k spelling changes the pronunciation as well as the look, which is unusual for a respelling.

Fashion outlook
Markia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The k removes an ambiguity that the c spelling has always carried.
- Kia is waiting inside it as a short, modern and entirely usable name.
- It connects to one of the most widely used names in the Western world without repeating it.
- It will be read as Marcia by people who assume the c spelling was intended.
- The three-syllable pronunciation has to be established, because the near neighbor is said with two.
- There is no Latin feminine behind this exact form, and it is better to say so than to imply one.
