Markeisha is built on a man's name and the join is invisible, because the two halves share a letter. Read it one way and the k closes Mark; read it the other and the k opens the ending. The same letter does both jobs, and there is no way to say which it belongs to.

Where it comes from

Our story of Markeisha

The saint whose name is at the front has one of the better relic stories. Two Venetian merchants took his body out of Alexandria in the ninth century and got it past the customs inspectors, according to the account Venice itself told, by packing it in a barrel under layers of pork, which the Muslim officials would not handle. Whether or not that happened, the city built its basilica around what arrived and took his winged lion as its own emblem, and it is still on the flag. The American name works differently and needs no saint. It attaches a productive ending to a father's or a grandfather's name kept whole, which is a long-standing way of honoring somebody without simply repeating them; and where the two pieces meet on a shared consonant, the seam disappears, which is the mark of a name that was made by ear rather than assembled from parts.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The front is Mark, a Roman name usually connected to the god of war, and that much is inherited. The ending is American and means nothing; it was in general circulation as a name-part by the time this name was made. Where the two are welded, a shared consonant makes even the division uncertain, so the name cannot be given a meaning as a whole and should not be given one.

Pronouncing Markeisha

mar-KEE-shuh

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The k is said once, not twice, which is the whole reason the seam is invisible; nothing in speech tells you whether it ends the first half or begins the second.

Markeisha sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1992, with 100 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Markeisha sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The rhythm is the settled American one, so the name sounds established rather than experimental.
  • It carries a family name inside it in a way that is legible to anyone who knows the tradition.
  • Keisha is a complete, current name sitting in the back half, ready to use.
What to consider
  • Several spellings of the same sound are in use, so spelling it out is a permanent task.
  • The name is closely dated to one American generation and reads as a mother's name.
  • There is no meaning to hand a child who asks, and the shared consonant makes even the parts hard to explain.
